| Analysis Note | Agglutination activity is expressed in μg per mL and is determined from serial dilutions in phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.2, of a 1 mg per mL solution. This activity is the lowest concentration to agglutinate a 2% suspension of human erythrocytes after 1 hr incubation at 25°C. |
| Biochem/physiol Actions | Bauhinia purpurea agglutinin (BPA). Extracts of B. purpurea seeds are reported to contain an anti-N blood group specific lectin, but after purification BPA is not blood group specific. BPA has an affinity for N-acetyl-D-galactosamine and D-galactose. |
| Preparation Note | Purified by affinity chromatography using the method of Osawa, T., et al., Methods in Enzymology, 50, 367 (1978). |
